DIY BUDGET KITCHEN MAKEOVERS

DIY BUDGET KITCHEN MAKEOVERS

Have you ever noticed that people tend to gravitate to the kitchen? People love to gather around food and friends, and the kitchen often becomes a focal point for the house. But kitchens are so practical and permanent that it’s hard to keep them stylish and up-to-date without expensive renovations every few years.

Here are 6 steps to a do-it-yourself budget kitchen makeover that will completely change the look of your room without breaking the bank!

1. Wall Paint

The first step in changing a room is wall paint. It seems simple, but the colour on the walls can drastically change the feel of the room. Neutral tones are great for kitchen spaces to appropriately match with cabinets, appliances, dishware, and décor.

If you’re interested in a bold colour statement, consider painting an accent wall with a vibrant colour. This can make the space look bigger and create a unique colour palette for your kitchen. It’s also easy to change the next time you want to do a kitchen makeover on a budget!

2. Wall Decals

Wall decals are the cheapest way to brighten up any space, including an unused or empty kitchen wall. Decals add a detailed, personalized touch to your budget kitchen makeover for under $100! You can buy these removable decals premade or get creative with a custom design. They can be anything from patterns to quotes to pictures.

3. Backsplash

One of the best budget kitchen makeover techniques is updating the backsplash. The backsplash is the tiling or design that goes on the wall-space between the counter and the cabinets to protect your walls from splashes and spills.

A new backsplash can completely change the look, feel, and design of the kitchen. You may be thinking “backsplashes are expensive, how does this help me makeover my kitchen on a budget?” Try a peel-and-stick backsplash! These tend to be inexpensive, easy to apply, and grout-free (so cleanup is a piece of cake)!

4. Cabinet Cornice Moulding

Buy or even make if you’re really handy, cornice moulding that you can attach to the top of your cabinets.

Often there is unused space between cabinets and the ceiling, which can make the room seem shorter than it is. Adding moulding can lengthen the room and draw the eye towards any décor that you may have above eye level.

Although on the slightly pricier side of this budget kitchen makeover, cabinet cornice moulding is easy to install and will give your kitchen an upscale appearance. In the long term, it can even be a nice added touch if you try to sell the house.

5. Paint Cabinetry

Painting your cabinets is the one DIY budget kitchen makeover move that will completely change the entire look of your kitchen overnight. If you have wood cabinets, you may be reluctant to paint. However, if you have pre-painted cabinets, a fresh coat or new colour can completely enliven the room.

You can even paint the cabinets different colours to create a unique décor combo. Similar to painting the walls, you could opt for a neutral colour that won’t go out of style. In that case, paint the insides of the cabinets with a contrast colour! Accent shelving can create a fun pop to your kitchen without being too daring.

6. Kick Plate Lights

Now that we’ve taken care of the walls and the cabinets, let’s look at the floor. The best way to add a bit of ambiance with your budget kitchen makeover is to attach rope lights underneath your kick plate (the protective sheet underneath your cabinets).

Adding a string of lights under the kick plate can work to illuminate your kitchen and draw attention down to your clean floors. It almost gives your kitchen the feeling of floating in air. Kick plate lights can also function as a nightlight for kids (or late-night snackers)!

A little bit of paint, décor, wood, and lighting will drastically transform the look and feel of your kitchen in just a few hours—and for only a few bucks!
